Are digital UK eVisas accepted instead of BRP cards?

VISA-FREE Countries for UK BRP/ILR (eVisa) Holders
Map of VISA-FREE Countries for UK BRP/ILR (eVisa) Holders | © Visa Traveler

Since 31 December 2024, the UK has replaced physical BRP cards with new digital eVisas. It’s been close to a year, and many countries are still catching up on this new update.

If your BRP card is still unexpired (valid), you can continue to use that to travel to any of the countries below. Even though, as per UKVI, you are required to create a UKVI account and download your eVisa, many countries consider your “unexpired” UK BRP card as proof of legal residence status in the UK.

If your BRP card has expired and you only have a digital eVisa, look for countries that accept digital eVisas in place of BRP cards.

For each country in the list, I have noted whether digital eVisas are accepted. I highlighted this in green and red so there is no confusion. Below is the explanation of each of these highlights.

Are digital eVisas accepted? What does this mean?
ACCEPTEDUK eVisa prints are accepted and you must have a share code to prove that you have legal residence status in the UK.
NOT ACCEPTEDUK eVisa prints are NOT accepted. You must have a physical “unexpired” UK BRP card to prove your legal residence status in the UK.
UNCLEARI could not confirm whether a UK eVisa print is accepted or not. I recommend carrying your physical “unexpired” UK BRP card. If your BRP card already expired, then you will have to wait for this country to catch up and start accepting eVisas. I will continue to monitor these countries and update as soon as they start to accept digital eVisas.

Until all countries start to accept digital eVisas, make sure to carry both the physical BRP card and the eVisa print. We never know which one they would like to see.

Do you need a Share Code for UK eVisa?

If you are carrying an eVisa print, the airline staff at the time of check-in or the immigration officers at the airport may ask for a share code. The share code helps them verify the authenticity of your residence status in the UK.

You can generate a share code from within your UKVI account. Share code is valid for 90 days, so you can use it for multiple trips.

Now, let’s look at each of these countries and their requirements.

It appears that a Kenyan passport holder cannot apply for Turkish online visa even if he/she has a UK e-visa. Is this assertion correct?

Hi Iftikhar! That’s correct! Kenyan passport holders are not eligible for Turkey eVisa (online visa) even if they hold UK e-Visa. Kenyan passport holders must apply for the visa from a Turkish embassy.

Hi Sid! Yes, but only UK visit visas (sticker), not UK eVisas (study, work, spouse, ILR). This is what the official website says:
“Valid visit visa to UAE, UK, USA, KSA (excluding Hajj & Umrah visa), Schengen or USA Green Card“.

This article is specifically for UK eVisas (previously BRP or ILR). For UK visa (sticker), check out this article on countries you can travel with UK Visa.

Hello, Morrocans with a UK eVisa need a visa to enter Cayman Islands.

Hi Fatima! Thanks for the update! My research shows that only “UK permanent residents” (meaning those with ILR status) are allowed. The UK eVisa must say that you have “Indefinite Leave to Remain” in the UK. If that’s what you are saying, then we are on the same page. I will update the post accordingly.

But if you meant Moroccans with a UK eVisa (work, student, spouse, ILR, etc) are not allowed to enter Cayman Islands at all, then I would need an official proof for that. If you have a link or an email from the authorities, please let me know.

North Macedonia doesn’t accept UK eVisa. Only valid Type-C visitor visa is allowed (must be a sticker visa).

Hi Kayes! That’s correct! North Macedonia does not accept UK residence permits (all eVisas). That’s why I did not list North Macedonia in this article. They accept only UK standard visitor visas in the form of a visa vignette (sticker).

Hi, which part of the Georgian government website says that e-visas are not accepted?

This is what it states on the website: Aliens who are holders of valid visas or/and residence permits of below listed countries, may enter and stay in Georgia for 90 days in any 180 day period without Georgian visa.
To enter and stay in Georgia, appropriate visa or/and residence permit should be valid at the moment of crossing the Georgian border. This should be verified with the travel document or/and other relevant document.

Hi CS! Apologize for the late response! I source my information from MFA websites, consulate/embassy websites, IATA/TIMATIC database, forums such as Reddit, Facebook groups, reader feedback (readers of my website, my social media followers and members of my Facebook group) and finally, my own personal experience. I can’t mention all these links as sources. If I do, Google and other search engines will treat this blog article as spam. So I mention the main website, which in this case is the Georgian MFA website.

As per my research and experience, using a UK eVisa at the Georgian border is a hit or miss. If you have been to Georgia, you might know that Georgian immigration is usually impatient and don’t like taking up their time. UK eVisa requires using a share code to verify, which takes time and require knowing the process of using a share code to verify. Because of this, many Georgian immigration officers simply deny entry for those holding digital evisas, especially the new ones such as UK eVisas. You can search this yourself on Google or ask any AI tool for confirmation. I can’t mislead my audience and make them waste their hard earned money on flights that they can’t board because of misinformation. When I hear confirmation reports from my readers, I will update the information.

Serbia also checked quite a lot. I wasn’t allowed to board airline for Mexico , I think they need minimum USA visa, previous USA visit

Hi K! Thanks for the updates! Glad to know that you didn’t have any issuing entering Montenegro, Moldova, Albania and Serbia. Sorry to hear that you were not allowed to board the flight to Mexico. Did you know what was the reason? I know Mexico requires “permanent” residence permit, so they only allow ILR. With the introduction of UK eVisas, I’m not sure how the authorities will be able to tell if an eVisa is an ILR.

Hi there. May I know what passport did you use upon entering Jordan. I’m a Philippines passport holder and have a UK E-Visa (BRP). Did you just apply for Jordan E visa or Visa on arrival?

Hi Gio! Not sure if Othman will respond, but from my experience, Filipinos have to get e-Visa before the trip. Some nationalities are eligible for VOA if they purchase Jordan Pass, but Filipinos are not. Jordan e-Visa is easy and straightforward if you have residency in the UK (eVisa or BRP).
